about me and my workBorn 1960, Pembury, Kent 1980-83 Winchester School of Art, BA [hons] Textiles 1983-85 Royal College of Art, MA [RCA] Textiles Having visited Dorset many times for short breaks away from London I made the decision, in 1996, to move to the area. Out of this lifestyle change I found myself beginning to paint, inspired by the peculiarity of Portland and the surrounding area. My studio is situated at the top of the Island and forms part of an old Limekiln that is set against the backdrop of an old limestone quarry [ Kingbarrow Quarry], now given status as a nature reserve and just two minutes walk away from the spectacular views of Chesil Beach and the World Heritage 'Jurassic Coast'. The short walk through 'Tout Quarry Sculpture Park' to the coastal path is where you can usually find me sketching the breathtaking landscape. From this point I take a journey down to the sea and sit above Chesil Cove. I can now see the vast Chesil bank and the full weight of the sea (see the animated walk to the right, or click here for an enlargement of the walk). Having been trained in textiles enables me to think in many different dimensions and levels, from the fibre to the thread, from fabric to the garment. The end result comes from all these elements plus many others including colour/motif/pattern and texture. Within my work there is also a narrative - the place, the moment, the subject matter and response to these through marks applied onto the canvas through the medium of paint. Looking out from the coastal path on Portland you have an aerial view. The reflective light from the sea and sky constantly change the colour and mood of the landscape and the atmospheric conditions create a vortex, a distortion of light and energy. This combination of land, sea and sky is sometimes chaotic sometimes calm. On my gallery pages you will see my response to these unique qualities, reflecting the subject matter while setting a mood or place in time. <back to top of page - VickiClarkArt.com> exhibitions2004February - mixed show - The Bloxham Galleries, London May - Elemental Insight - Met Office, Exeter May - June - Dorset Art Weeks July - Summer Exhibition, Hutson Gallery, London November - Inspired Art Fair, Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London 2003July - Land - Sea - Sky - Poole Open - Peacock Gallery September - Seascapes - exhibition of paintings - Sherborne House <back to top of page - VickiClarkArt.com> contact meby telephone01305-823302 (from outside the UK: 0044-1305-823302) by fax01305-823303 (from outside the UK: 0044-1305-823303) by emailby postLimekiln 2 Easton Lane Portland Dorset DT5 1BW UK |
